Karnataka Style Khara Pongal ಕರ್ನಾಟಕ ಶೈಲಿಯ ಖಾರ ಪೊಂಗಲ್ (ಹುಗ್ಗಿ)


To prepare Khara pongal or huggi , you will need the following ingredients:

1/4th cup of rice

3/4th cup of moong dal (split yellow lentils)

3 cups of water

1 inch Ginger

1/2 tsp cumin seeds

1 1/2 tsp black pepper & cumin seeds coarse powder, 

1/4th Cup Grated Coconut for seasoning

Ghee and oil for cooking

Salt to taste


Instructions:

Rinse the rice and moong dal together in a pot until the water runs clear.

Add 3 cups of water and pressure cook until 3 whistles

Heat Ghee & Oil 

Add Cumin Seeds till splutter

Add the rice and dal to cook 

Add 1 cup of hot water until they are soft and the mixture has thickened & adjust as semi liquid consistency

Add 1/2 tsp of turmeric

Add 1 1/2 tsp of Coarse Cumin Seeds & Black Pepper Powder

Add Grated coconut

Add salt to taste.

Bring to boil 

Serve hot and enjoy with a dollop of butter with combination of sweet & sour chutney !
