Dal Tadka (No Onion, No Garlic )


To prepare Dal Tadka we need the following ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup of split lentils (toor dal)
  • 1/4 cup of cup of moong dal (split yellow lentils)
  • 1 1/2 cups of water
  • 1 tomato, chopped
  • 1 inch of ginger
  • 3/4 tsp of turmeric powder
  • Salt, to taste
  • 2 tbsp of ghee
  • 1 tsp of cumin seeds
  • A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
  • 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro for garnish
  • 1/4 tsp of Kasoori Methi
  • 1 inch of cinnamon
  • 3 Red Chillies
  • 1/2 tsp of Red Chilli Powder
  • 3/4 tsp of Garam Masala
Instructions:
  1. Rinse the lentils in water. Drain the water and add the lentils to a pressure cooker along with 1 tsp of oil, pinch of salt, 1/2 tsp of tumeric with 1 1/2 cups of water
  2. Close the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles or until the lentils are soft and mushy.
  3. Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mash the lentils with a spoon or a potato masher.
  4. In a pan, heat 2 tsp of ghee or oil. Once hot, add cumin seeds, cinnamon, chillies and asafoetida. Let the seeds splutter.
  5. Add chopped tomato, chopped ginger, cook until tomato softens
  6. Add the mashed lentils to the pan and mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes on medium flame.
  7. Adjust the consistency by adding hot water
  8. Add Red Chillin Powder, Garam Masala Powder
  9. Close the pan & cook for 3 more minutes
  10. Garnish with cilantro, kasuri methi and serve hot with rice or chapathi.
