To prepare Dal Tadka we need the following ingredients:
- 1/2 cup of split lentils (toor dal)
- 1/4 cup of cup of moong dal (split yellow lentils)
- 1 1/2 cups of water
- 1 tomato, chopped
- 1 inch of ginger
- 3/4 tsp of turmeric powder
- Salt, to taste
- 2 tbsp of ghee
- 1 tsp of cumin seeds
- A pinch of asafoetida (hing)
- 1/4 cup of chopped cilantro for garnish
- 1/4 tsp of Kasoori Methi
- 1 inch of cinnamon
- 3 Red Chillies
- 1/2 tsp of Red Chilli Powder
- 3/4 tsp of Garam Masala
Instructions:
- Rinse the lentils in water. Drain the water and add the lentils to a pressure cooker along with 1 tsp of oil, pinch of salt, 1/2 tsp of tumeric with 1 1/2 cups of water
- Close the pressure cooker and cook for 2-3 whistles or until the lentils are soft and mushy.
- Once the pressure releases, open the cooker and mash the lentils with a spoon or a potato masher.
- In a pan, heat 2 tsp of ghee or oil. Once hot, add cumin seeds, cinnamon, chillies and asafoetida. Let the seeds splutter.
- Add chopped tomato, chopped ginger, cook until tomato softens
- Add the mashed lentils to the pan and mix well. Cook for 2-3 minutes on medium flame.
- Adjust the consistency by adding hot water
- Add Red Chillin Powder, Garam Masala Powder
- Close the pan & cook for 3 more minutes
- Garnish with cilantro, kasuri methi and serve hot with rice or chapathi.
